Kia ora koutou katoa,

Bula vinaka, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Halo olaketa, Kia orana, Malo e lelei, Mauri, Talofa lava, Taloha ni & Warmest greetings,

Welcome to Tikanga Wakari, our amazing cultural, performing arts group. Tikanga Wakari refers to our schools unique culture; our way of doing things. Tikanga Wakari meet weekly and practise in the hall. It is open for all students NE-Y6 to join in term 1 (and Term 2 if you are a new student to the school). Our talent and skills are showcased in Term 3 with a performance at the Otago Maori and Pacific Island Festival.

Tikanga Wakari has an open invitation to the community to come along and share their expertise and knowledge with the group. We currently have a strong Pacific Island and Maori flavour to our performances.

In 2011, in consultation with the community, Andrea Benwell designed a Wakari inspired Kowhaiwhai pattern and uniform for Tikanga Wakari. Our Kowhaiwhai represents:

  • The shades of green were chosen from our school mural and represent the trees and plants that surround our school.
  • The two triangles represent the hills.
  • The two aroha shapes represent the passion our home and school communities bring to Wakari School.
  • In the middle of the kowhaiwhai are the 4C’s, the values at the heart of our school; Consideration, Co operation, Common Sense and Courtesy.
