"Happy, Confident Learners"

About Us

Wakari School is a Contributing Primary School located in the hill suburbs of Dunedin. We cater for children from ages 5 – 11 (Years 1 – 6). The School has a Roll of around 300 pupils which increases as new entrants join us throughout the year.

Our Values

At Wakari School we promote our values of

Honesty, Manners, Respect, Cooperation & Kindness.

As a Family orientated school we promote and encourage parental involvement. This assistance is vital for the children’s education during their time with us. School Camps, trips, swimming and School Fairs would simply not be possible without the assistance that Whanau offer. Our school has a proud tradition of community involvement stretching back to 1858!

Our Vision and Aims

We have Three Syndicates across the School which operate in Learning Hubs. We aim to provide our pupils with the means to achieve their best in a caring, safe and secure environment. Wakari School benefits from a true team approach.

Registrations for Term 4 Summer Sports are now available and will close on Wednesday 16th September.

Sports on offer for Term 4 are:

Flippaball – Year 2 upwards (Sunday games)
Touch – All ages (Thursday games)
Futsal – All ages (Tuesday- Year 1-4 games or Wednesday- Year 5/6 games)
Girls Only Smash Cricket – Year 3-6  (Monday games)

If you are able to help as a team manager during games, please indicate this on the form when enrolling. Teachers take on the coaching roles and run practices at lunch times. We do welcome parents to come along and help run practices at lunchtimes though, so if you are available please indicate this when signing up.

It is important to note that if you do sign your child up for a sport that they are committed to play for the whole season. It is very hard on teams and coaches if children pull out once registrations have closed.

Welcoming Ewan Todd as Principal of Wakari Primary School – Term 1, 2027
1 Sep 2026

Kia ora Parents, Whānau and Caregivers,

We have completed the recruitment and selection process to find a new Principal, starting

Term One, 2027. The Board of Trustees was impressed with the interest in this role and the

high calibre of candidates who put their name forward.

Following a thorough selection process, we are pleased to confirm that Ewan Todd has

accepted the Principal role and he will start Term One, 2027.

Ewan brings significant educational leadership experience, having served as Acting

Principal, Deputy Principal and Assistant Principal at Māori Hill School. Throughout his

career he has demonstrated a deep commitment to student success, staff development,

strong relationships with families and whānau, and creating positive school cultures where

all children can thrive.

Ewan’s leadership philosophy centres on building meaningful connections with students,

staff, parents and the wider community while fostering high expectations, innovation and a

love of learning. As a long-time Dunedin educator and parent himself, he understands the

importance of strong school-community partnerships.

We believe Ewan will continue to maintain the great reputation that Wakari Primary School

has a school focused on Happy Confident Learners.

Ngā mihi,

Jason Sargeant, Presiding Member

Wakari Primary School Board of Trustees
